OPS Recovers Stolen Items, Arrests Made

MACOMB, IL -- The Western Illinois University Office of Public Safety (OPS) has recovered cellular phones and other items that were stolen from a Joliet West school bus on campus Saturday, Oct. 24.

According to OPS Lt. Tom Clark, the department conducted an investigation based on leads regarding individuals who were observed exiting a school bus parked near Hanson Field on Oct. 24. Reports were filed that evening regarding the thefts of numerous items from the bus, including cell phones, wallets and cash (the original report can be found at tinyurl.com/qhfzael).

On Wednesday, Nov. 4, detectives from OPS and the McDonough County Sheriff's office executed a search and arrest warrant at a Calumet City, IL, residence, where they arrested non-student Kareem M. Spann, 21, of Calumet City, for burglary, and recovered stolen property. Spann was extradited to Macomb, where he was lodged in the McDonough County Jail pending bond.

On Monday, Nov. 2 at 3:58 p.m. Daija L. Lee, 18, of 405 Bayliss Hall, was arrested in Mowbray Hall for burglary in connection with the incident. She was transported to the McDonough County Jail where she was lodged pending bond (see report from Nov. 4 at tinyurl.com/ok2bmse).

"These arrests were the result of diligent police work and a combined effort of several law enforcement agencies," OPS Director Scott Harris said. "The officers are to be commended for their work in solving this crime so that the stolen property could be returned to its rightful owners. I would also like to thank the McDonough County Sheriff's Department, the McDonough County State Attorney's Office and the Calumet City Police Department for their assistance and cooperation."
