WIU Pre-Law Symposium Feb. 15

MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University Centennial Honors College will present the 15th annual Pre-Law Symposium from 5-7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15 in the University Union Lamoine Room.

This event is open free to the WIU community. Students interested in the study of law are encouraged to attend.

The symposium begins at 5 p.m. with an informational reception where students will have an opportunity to meet representatives from several invited law school admission officers and recruiters. Law schools include Chicago- Kent College of Law; DePaul University College of Law; Drake University Law School; Indiana Tech Law School; John Marshall Law School; Loyola University Chicago School of Law; Marquette University Law School; Mitchell-Hamlin School of Law; Northern Illinois University School of Law; Saint Louis University School of Law; Southern Illinois University School of Law; University of Illinois College of Law; University of Iowa College of Law; University of Missouri School of Law; University of Wisconsin Law School; University of Saint Thomas School of Law and Valparaiso University Law School.

This year's keynote address will be delivered at 6 p.m. by WIU alumna and attorney Margaret W. Wong. She received her bachelor's degrees in biology and chemistry in 1973 before getting her law degree from the University of Buffalo Law School in 1976.

Wong and her sister, Cecilia, are both WIU graduates. She founded her own law office to help immigrants who encountered the barriers they did when coming to the United States. Margaret W. Wong and Associates has 10 attorneys and a staff of 35 across the nation.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., there will be a panel discussion and a question and answer session on preparation for law school. The discussion will be moderated by WIU General Counsel Rica Calhoun, and panelists include WIU alumni Melanie Huettman (history, 2015), Nicholas Atwood (history, 2009), Christopher Solger (political science, 2011) and Genc Arifi (law enforcement and justice administration, 2013).

Sponsors of this year's symposium include the McDonough County Bar Association; WIU alumnus and attorney Matt Bills; the WIU Foundation Office; WIU College of Arts and Sciences; WIU School of (LEJA) and the WIU departments of political science, history, philosophy and religious studies and economics and decision sciences.
