MACOMB, IL – The Beta Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma at Western Illinois University will celebrate its 70th anniversary at the school Monday, Feb. 15.

The chapter was founded at Western in 1946. This year also marks the 118th anniversary of the founding of Sigma Sigma Sigma on April 20, 1898 at Longwood College in Virginia.

To celebrate both milestones, the WIU chapter will host a Founder's Day Weekend April 16-17 in Macomb. A variety of events are being planned for Tri Sigma alumnae including a reunion social and Founder's Day Luncheon.

Beta Epsilon will also be celebrating the birthday of Lorraine Epperson, former WIU Trustee, WIU Distinguished Alumni Award Winner and a Macomb business owner, as part of the weekend's events. Epperson was the first president of Beta Epsilon and has stayed involved with the chapter since then.

Beta Epsilon has initiated nearly 2,000 members at Western since its founding.

"Being a member of Beta Epsilon is a source of great pride for me," said Sigma Sigma Sigma Chapter President Brenna Smith. "When attending national leadership conferences and educational programming through Tri Sigma's National Headquarters, I am always so proud to say that I am from Beta Epsilon. We have been a staple in the community of Western Illinois University for 70 years, and the pride and traditions associated with our chapter are valuable beyond measure."

Smith added that the members of Tri Sigma challenge each other to uphold the core values of wisdom, power, faith, hope and love.

"The vision of Sigma Sigma Sigma is to provide exceptional experiences that empower women to change the world" she said. "My membership in this organization has given me wonderful leadership skills, increased confidence in myself, and most importantly, a support system of strong, fierce women on whom I can always depend."
