MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University Department of Geography has announced that Kansas State University Distinguished Professor of Geography Richard A. Marston will deliver the annual Gabler Lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 22 in the University Union's Sandburg Theatre.

Marston will present "The Power of Physical Geography and Geospatial Science in Environmental Management." His lecture explores some of the lessons he learned through experiences in the field, as well as offering prospects for the future.

Marston has served as president of the Association of American Geographers, as well as co-editor-in-chief of "Geomorphology: An International Journal of Pure and Applied Geomorphology."

He has published numerous journal articles and books and has received more than $2.5 million in grants and contracts for his research. In 2011, Marston was named a Jefferson Science Fellow by the National Academies and spent the 2011-12 academic year in Washington, D.C. as a senior analyst with the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Intelligence and Research, Office of the Geographer and Global Issues.

He earned a doctorate from Oregon State University in 1980, and taught geography and geomorphology at the University of Texas El Paso, the University of Wyoming and Oklahoma State University, prior to coming to Kansas State. He has also previously served as director of the Foundation for Glacier and Environmental Research.

The annual lecture series is named for Robert Gabler, who was chair of Western's departments of Geography and Geology, as well as International Programs before retiring in 1990.

The lecture series was announced in 2004 to honor his legacy with the University.
