WIU Graduate Research Conference Winners Announced

MACOMB, IL – The third annual Graduate Research Conference was held at Western Illinois University Friday, March 4 with more than 200 people in attendance.

The event featured about 100 podium and poster presentations by WIU's graduate student researchers. Engineering Technology Associate Professor Rafael Obregón from provided the keynote address "Dream, Validate, Execute."

Awards were presented at the end of the event. Those honored at the 2016 event include:

Research Posters

First place – Emmanuel Adebayo, a physics graduate student from Nigeria - "Overlapping Molecular Clouds in the Low Mass Star Forming Region L1521F"

Second place – Lalitha Deepti Kolluru, a chemistry graduate student from Macomb - "Synthesis of Symmetrical Biaryl Compounds by Detelluration Reactions"

Third place – Michele Rehbein, a health sciences graduate student from Darien, IL - "West Nile Virus Surveillance in Rural Western Illinois"


Research Presentations

First place – Jessica Marty, an education and interdisciplinary studies graduate student from Macomb - "Vocabulary Instruction: The Effectiveness of the Frayer Model for Level 2 and 3 ELLs in First Through Third Grade"

Second place – Natalia Kazakova, a psychology graduate student from Paradise Valley, AZ - "Correlates of Inhalant Use in a Sample of College Students"

Third place – Shyan Edwards, a sociology graduate student from Jamaica - "Capitalism and Slavery: A Historical Comparative Analysis of the Abolition of West African Slavery Between Jamaica and the United States of America in the Nineteenth Century"
