MACOMB, IL - Western Illinois University Dan and Laura Webb Professor of Political Science Julia Albarracin will deliver "The Culture of Incorporation: How Immigrants Negotiate their Culture in Central Illinois" at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 29 in the Multicultural Center's multipurpose room.

The lecture is based on Albarracin's book on the integration of Mexican immigrants in Beardstown and Monmouth and discusses the ways immigrants negotiate their cultural incorporation into the host society.

"Moving to a new country requires a number of cultural adaptations that lead immigrants to feel part of the host society," said Albarracin. "This presentation explores the cultural adaptation of immigrants in these two towns, as reflected by their language acquisition, sense of identification with Latinos and Anglo-Americans and connectedness with different groups in society. Becoming part of the host society involves learning the local language, negotiating cultures of origin and settlement, settling into a new neighborhood and establishing social relationships."

Albarracin's lecture is part of WIU's celebration of National Women's History Month and is sponsored by the WIU Women's Center, the Casa Latina Cultural Center, the Latin American Student Organization (LASO) and the Undocumented Students and Allies Coalition (USAC).
