MOLINE, IL — Two student groups at Western Illinois University-Quad Cities will host National Poetry Month events.

The Liberal Arts and Sciences Student Organization (LASSO) will host an open mic poetry night from 7-9:30 p.m. Friday, April 22, at Happy Joe's PizzaGrille (located at The Mills at Riverbend Commons, 2900 River Dr. in Moline.) The event is open free to the public and is designed for all lovers of the written word—writers and readers alike—to share both original compositions and old favorites.

Participants are encouraged bring a few poems and read their selections at the event. Pizza will be provided by LASSO, the WIU Department of English and the WIU-QC InterDisciplinary English and Arts Society (IDEAS).

A second event, "Coffee House Bash," set from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, April 29, will feature music and open mic poetry reading opportunities and is also open free to the public.

According to event sponsors, the first hour of the Coffee House Bash will focus on poetry that is family friendly in nature. During the second hour of the reading, participants will be able to share their own selections for an "anything goes" session.

Entertainment will be available before and after the poetry reading sessions and free food will be provided by IDEAS. Winners WIU-QC poetry contest winners (who will receive prizes from local vendors) will be announced at the Coffee House Bash.
