Behind the bricks and mortar, there are the people of Western Illinois University and the Macomb community.

Who I Am: My name is Lisa Ward and I used to be a southerner, but I married into a Midwest family and after 20 years, I am proud to call Macomb home. I'd like to think I am a happy-go-lucky kind of girl, married to the man of my dreams and although at times, a demanding career, but a very rewarding one.

What I Do: I opened Magnolia's Restaurant and Catering 20 years ago. Whew … it has been a great ride! This community has welcomed me as a local and supported my business for all those years. In turn, I like to give back to several charities, community events and help our community grow. I also like to make newcomers feel as welcomed as I did.

Why I Love WIU: My Western relationship was immediate as my new dad was the registrar. From a business standpoint, it made sense to become involved, but it goes so much deeper than just business. I have to give credit to a few people who really launched me into the Western Family. I was invited to attend events that I did not even know existed. The scholarship program, advisory boards and alumni programs really kick-started my love of WIU. To sit in a room with hundreds of students, listening to how their scholarship helped their academic career was quite rewarding. Serving on an advisory board and having interaction with students wanting the same career made me quite proud to help. And being involved with alumni relations was the cake. After all, I have employed 75 percent students for 20 years. I know these graduates personally and professionally.

I would love to say I love WIU because of the awesome athletic program, the social events hosted by WIU, the support in business, which is all true. However, I am most proud to see what the University has done with to make each of my students, my staff, be successful in their life after WIU. I have many students who have grown up to lead fulfilling careers all because of their start here.
