MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University Professor of Music Michael Ericson will retire May 31.

Ericson holds bachelor's degrees in music and music education from the University of Northern Colorado and his master's degree in oboe performance from Indiana University. He joined the WIU School of Music faculty in 1986 and is a member of the Camerata Woodwind Quintet.

For the past 26 years, Ericson has served as principal oboist for the Peoria Symphony and the Knox-Galesburg Symphony orchestras. He has recorded for Opus One and Crystal Records and is a member of the International Double Reed Society and the National Association for Music Education.

"Professor Mike Ericson is leaving an oboe legacy at Western Illinois University," said School of Music Interim Chair Tammie Walker. "His 30-year commitment to his students' growth, the success of the Camerata Woodwind Quintet and his own mastery of his instrument is truly remarkable. His students have won national competitions and are continuing to carry on his solid pedagogical methods with their own students. Underneath Mike's unassuming, down-to-earth personality is a fierce advocate for music and exceptionally high standards for himself and his students. He will be sorely missed."
