MACOMB/GALESBURG, IL -- Western Illinois University and Carl Sandburg College signed a new admission partnership program (APP) May 11 to assist international students in the planning and completion of their associate and bachelor's degrees through the two institutions.

Under the APP, signed by administrators from both schools in a ceremony at Sandburg's Main Campus, Sandburg international students, who complete their Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree, will be guaranteed admission to Western, provided they meet admission standards, policies and procedures.

The schools also will collaborate and coordinate on recruitment, English language training through Western's English as a Second Language Institute (WESL) and transfer of international students in accordance with the program and degree requirements of each school.

"Western Illinois University and Carl Sandburg College have collaborated for many years to provide outstanding educational opportunities to students within west central Illinois. We are pleased to join together with Sandburg to provide opportunities to international students," said WIU President Jack Thomas. "Western is committed to providing international students with the support needed to have a successful college experience and this unique partnership with Carl Sandburg College will provide that support."

This is the second specialized partnership the schools have agreed to in recent months. Sandburg and WIU came to an agreement last year that allows graduates of Sandburg's honors program to transfer to Western's Centennial Honors College.

"International students often face more challenges than the traditional student, so this partnership will be hugely beneficial for them," Sandburg President Lori Sundberg said. "They're in a new country, experiencing a new culture and many times learning a new language. Giving them a clear path to follow toward their associate and bachelor's degrees, in addition to providing them training on English as a second language through Western, will only help them achieve the level of education they desire."
