ROTC Commissions 15 Officers

MACOMB, IL – Fifteen Western Illinois University Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) cadets were commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army during a ceremony Friday afternoon.

The cadets were given the oath of office by Lt. Gen. Vincent Stewart, director of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and the commander of the Joint Functional Component Command for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance. Stewart is also a 1981 WIU graduate, with a degree in history, and he was presented with one of two WIU Distinguished Alumni awards during commencement ceremonies May 14.

Western's award-winning ROTC program was established in 1968. The University's military science department has a longstanding tradition of excellence. The department was honored with the Douglas MacArthur Award for the best ROTC battalion in the Midwest in 1994, 2001 and 2002. The Leatherneck Battalion has also been honored as the Best ROTC Battalion in the Brigade in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Individuals who took the Oath of Office of a commissioned officer are listed below:

AURORA, IL: Cadet Krystal Brown received her bachelor's degree in LEJA. She was commissioned in the Army Reserve and will serve as an adjutant general officer. Her parents, William and Virgin Brown, were present to unveil her gold bars.

BETHALTO, IL: Cadet Daniel Dixon received his bachelor's degree in LEJA. He was commissioned in the Army on active duty and will serve as an ordnance officer. His parents, Lisa and Carl Dixon, were present to unveil his gold bars.

BLOOMINGTON, IL: Cadet Steven Smith received his bachelor's degree in LEJA. He was commissioned in the Army National Guard and will serve as a field artillery officer. His parents, Scott and Jenny Smith, were present to unveil his gold bars.

BOLINGBROOK, IL: Cadet Nico Diaz received his bachelor's degree in LEJA. He was commissioned in the Army National Guard and will serve as an armor officer. His parents, Linda and Gerardo Dias, were present to unveil his gold bars.

CAMP POINT, IL: Cadet Battalion Commander Michael Quigley received his master's degree in public administration. He commissioned in the Army on active duty and will serve as a military intelligence officer. His wife, Kali Quigley, was present to unveil his gold bars.

CHICAGO, IL: Cadet Anthony Kurien received his bachelor's degree in LEJA. He was commissioned in the Army National Guard and will serve as an armor officer. His parents, Thomas Kurien and Teresa Viallo, were present to unveil his gold bars.

GALESBURG, IL: Cadet Amber Schlomer received her bachelor's degree in LEJA. She was commissioned in the Army National Guard and will serve as a transportation officer. Her friend, Betsy Larson, and her brother, Chad Schlomer, were present to unveil her gold bars.

MOLINE, IL: Cadet Angela Marshall received her bachelor's degree in LEJA. She was commissioned in the Army National Guard and will serve as a quartermaster officer. Her parents, Sheri and Tod Marshall, were present to unveil her gold bars.

NAPERVILLE, IL: Cadet Larry Scullark received a bachelor's degree in general studies. He commissioned in the Army Reserve and will serve as a transportation officer. His parents, Larry and Alfreda Scullark, were present to unveil his gold bars.

PITTSFIELD, IL: Cadet Amber Adams received her bachelor's degree in exercise science. She was commissioned in the Army National Guard and will serve as a medical services officer. Her fiancé, Justin Critchelow, was present to unveil her gold bars.

PITTSFIELD, IL: Cadet Andrew Cox received his bachelor's degree in LEJA. He was commissioned in the Army National Guard and will serve as a military intelligence officer. His parents, Kent and Wendy Cox, were present to unveil his gold bars.

PLAINFIELD, IL: Cadet Bien Ernest Bordas received his bachelor's degree in law enforcement and justice administration (LEJA). He was commissioned in the Army on active duty and will serve as a field artillery officer. His parents, Faith and Eddie Bordas, were present to unveil his gold bars.

SHILOH, IL: Cadet Wade Sweger received his bachelor's degree in physics. He was commissioned in the Army on active duty and will serve as a chemical corps officer. His father, LTC (Ret.) William Sweger, and his brother, William Sweger III, a 2007 WIU ROTC commissionee, were present to unveil his gold bars.


ALABAMA
FLORENCE, AL:
Cadet Elijah Skipper received his bachelor's degree in engineering. He commissioned in the Army on active duty and will serve as an engineer officer. His father, Vernon, and grandfather Hollis Skipper, were present to unveil his gold bars.


IOWA
WASHINGTON, IA:
Cadet Shelby White received a bachelor's degree in art. She commissioned in the Army on active duty and will serve as an aviation officer. Her parents, Don and Marry Ann White, were present to unveil her gold bars.
