Homecoming 2016: 'Rocky in Space: Our Pride is Out of This World'

MACOMB, IL – Campus pride will be out of this world at Western Illinois University Friday-Saturday, Oct. 7-8, as Western hosts its annual Homecoming celebration with "Rocky in Space."

Events kick off the week before with the 10th annual "Celebrating Town & Gown" event Thursday, Sept. 29. Then, Homecoming weekend events begin at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7 with an All Alumni Social at the Alumni House. Complimentary food, beer, wine and soda will be available, as well as a cash bar. Reunion celebrations for the classes of 1966, 1976 and 1991 also begin Friday and continue throughout the weekend. Alumni of all years are welcome to celebrate being a Leatherneck.

At 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, the "Old Stompin' Ground Runaround" 5K run/1.5 mile walk will be held, with registration beginning at 7 a.m. at the Alumni House.

Alumni are invited to watch the popular Homecoming Parade from the Alumni House. The parade leaves from the Macomb square at 10:30 a.m., eventually heads to campus, passes the Alumni House and ends at Adam Street and Western Avenue.

At noon, an alumni cookout will be held at "The Right Place" tent in a new location in Q-Lot. Food will be available for $5. Representatives from the University's four academic colleges and several departments will be available at the tent and cruising around Q-Lot in decked out golf carts.

Events conclude with the Leatherneck football game versus Indiana State at 3 p.m. on WIU's Hanson Field. Tickets are available in advance for $15.

During the days leading up to Homecoming 2016 weekend festivities, students will be participating in a variety of events on campus and in Macomb, including painting downtown windows with a Homecoming theme, painting "Rocky" paws on University Drive, the annual cardboard boat regatta and the annual "Yell Like Hell" event.
