MACOMB, IL -- The officers at Western Illinois University's Office of Public Safety have been issuing numerous "tickets" this month, in the name of awareness and building goodwill among the student population at WIU.

The "tickets" handed out aren't really citations, rather they are special certificates given to random students who are "caught" obeying the law and/or using a service provided by OPS. Donations from campus businesses - the University Bookstore, Union Burger King, and local businesses Hardee's and McDonald's - have allowed officers to reward students for being safe around campus.

According to Officer Liz Henley, who spearheaded the campus safety awareness reward program, which has taken place during Campus Safety Awareness Month, students have been recognized for wearing their safety belts, using designated crosswalks, utilizing the escort service and blue light system, participating in safety programs and more.

"We want students, staff, and the community to be comfortable using our services, as well as contacting us if they see a crime occur on campus," Henley explained. "This rewards program not only raises awareness for our programs and services, but it also serves as a positive contact with the public. I've enjoyed recognizing the students and I think other officers have also."

Henley added that in her opinion, the majority of the campus community already practices safe habits, but "it's always nice to receive positive recognition for the efforts of everyone in accomplishing this goal."
