County LWV to Present Panel Discussion Feb. 28

MACOMB, IL – The League of Women Voters of McDonough County will sponsor the public panel presentation "The Press and Government Accountability" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28 in the Macomb City Hall Community Room.

The event is co-sponsored by the WIU departments of political science, broadcasting and journalism and history.

The panel at the event includes:

• Gayle Tronvig Carper, attorney and Macomb Fifth Ward alderman

• Jasmine Crighton, news coordinator with the WIU Department of Broadcasting and Journalism

• Rich Egger, news director, Tri-States Public Radio

• Jill Joline Myers, professor and interim director of the WIU School of Law Enforcement and Justice Administration

• Patrick Stout, newspaper correspondent and columnist, retired broadcaster and WIU performance instructor

The panel will be moderated by WIU Department of History Professor Ginny Boynton, who is also a member of the League of Women Voters of McDonough County. Boynton said she will ask panelists to address what citizens can do to "support a free and responsible press, the relationship between government and the press and the problem of 'fake news.'"

The panel will take written questions following the presentation and the audience will have the opportunity to talk with the panelists during a post-event presentation.

The League of Women Voters of McDonough County is a nonpartisan political organization active in the county for over 51 years, working to influence public policy. The organization neither supports nor opposes political candidates or political parties and encourages citizen participation at all level of government through study, consensus and action.

Membership in the League of Women Voters is open to all men or women 17 years of age or older.
