MACOMB, IL -- Current and prospective students interested in teaching English/language arts, social studies, math or sciences in grades 5-8 within Illinois schools are invited to the Middle Education Program kickoff at Western Illinois University Tuesday, Feb. 28.

The program, which will be held from 4-5 p.m. in Horrabin Hall 1, will have the opportunity to meet WIU curriculum and instruction faculty and area middle school educators. The newly approved Middle Education Program for undergraduates will begin in Fall 2017.

According to Barry Witten, interim chair of the WIU Department of Curriculum and Instruction, program candidates combine a foundation of general studies with major courses and clinical experiences with children as they complete the middle level education curriculum. A Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in Middle Level Education leads to Illinois teacher licensure in grades fifth through eighth grade. Candidates will choose to prepare for endorsements in one of four areas of specialization -- science, social studies, literacy or math -- and it will be possible for candidates to complete more than one area of specialization. In addition to extensive coursework in the major, candidates begin observing middle level students early in the program and begin working as tutors and classroom aides in their junior year. During the comprehensive pre-student teaching field experience in the first semester of their senior year, candidates teach lessons in their area of specialization. The program culminates in a 12-week student teaching experience.
