Frey Named Chair of Curriculum and Instruction at WIU

MACOMB, IL – Central Michigan University Professor Laura Frey has been named chair of the Western Illinois University Department of Curriculum and Instruction, effective July 1, according to College of Education and Human Services Dean Erskine Smith.

Frey is a faculty member in the Department of Counseling and Special Education at Central Michigan University (CMU). Frey joined the faculty at CMU as an assistant professor in 2004.

During her time at CMU, Frey has published over 30 peer reviewed articles and book chapters; authored or co-authored over 10 reports; presented multiple papers and workshops at a variety of regional, national and international conferences and received funding for more than 15 small grants. She received the Distinguished Service Award in 2015 and the Women of Excellence Recognition in 2011 from CMU.

Prior to joining CMU, Frey taught special education in several high schools in Iowa and Kansas, as well as in a day treatment center program in Kansas. She also served as a program administrator for a treatment center in Missouri and the director of special education for the Special School District for St. Louis County.

Frey earned her doctorate in special education and her M.S. in emotional disturbance from the University of Kansas. She also has an M.A. in dispute resolution from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. She received her B.S. in special education from the University of Iowa.
