MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University Administrative Aide Danette Phelps, from the Vice President for Administrative Services office, has been named the Al and Elaine Goldfarb Civil Service Employee of the Month for July.

Phelps was hired in January 1997 as a secretary III in the WIU Department of English/Geography. In November 2001, she was promoted to secretary IV in art, and in September 2007, she was promoted to staff clerk in the Office of Sponsored Projects. She transferred to her current office in July 2012 and audited to her current position in January 2016.

According to her nominator, as a long-standing employee of the University, Phelps is very knowledgeable of not only her department, but also processes campus-wide.

"She is enthusiastic, patient and professional with both internal and external customers," said her nominator. "She is a dedicated team member and always looks for opportunities to improve efficiency and streamline processes for the division. She is always willing to stop what she is doing to greet or assist others, and she always does so with a smile."

In August 2010, the Goldfarbs established an endowment to permanently fund the University's Civil Service Employee of the Month award. The Goldfarb endowment is used to fund a $100 award for the recipient of the Civil Service Employee of the Month, as well as a plaque.

The WIU Foundation provides a $500 stipend for the Civil Service Employee of the Year. Western faculty, staff and administrators, as well as community members, wishing to nominate a civil service employee for the monthly recognition should contact Civil Service Employees Council (CSEC) representative Christine Staley at CD-Staley@wiu.edu.
