Remembering Our Community's Vietnam Era Veterans: Military Appreciation Week

MACOMB, IL -- The Western Illinois University Alumni Association, the Department of History and the WIU Veterans Resource Center, as part of Military Appreciation Week Nov. 6-11, will host a Vietnam War veterans' roundtable discussion and a social to honor all veterans Thursday, Nov. 9.

The WIU Veterans' Roundtable and audience discussion, which will begin at 4 p.m. in the University Union Sandburg Theatre, will feature Vietnam War veterans who attended WIU sharing their experiences of the war and how their military experience shaped their lives. Participants include 1975 physics graduate Doug Rokke (U.S. Air Force, Vietnam service, 1969-1971), 1974 psychology graduate Roger Dooley (U.S. Marines, Vietnam service, 1968-1970), 1972 business graduate Wes Hartjen (U.S. Army, Vietnam service, 1966-1967) and 1968 social sciences graduate Larry Kuykendall (U.S. Army, Vietnam service, 1968-1970).

An Alumni & Friends Social will be held from 6-8 p.m. at the Western Illinois Museum in Macomb (201 S. Lafayette St.). The public is invited to attend the event, which will honor all veterans and recognize Vietnam-era veterans. There is no cost for the social; however, pre-registration is encouraged by calling (309) 298-1914 or emailing A-Association@wiu.edu.
