MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University Broadcasting and Journalism Instructor Jasmine Crighton has been elected to the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) Mid-America Board of Governors.

Crighton came to WIU in Fall 2012, and she teaches classes in broadcast news writing and television production. She is also the news director for WIU's NEWS3.

"I look forward to building a relationship between NATAS and students pursuing media careers, especially students in the western Illinois region," said Crighton. "My priority is to build a better connection between education and the media industry."

Crighton earned her Master of Arts in Journalism and Media Studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she also taught courses in television production. She has received an Emmy for outstanding technical director for a March 2008 broadcast.

Before coming to Western, Crighton taught broadcasting at West Liberty University in West Virginia, and later worked as the producer of WTOV9's morning show in Steubenville, OH.

WIU students have won numerous NATAS awards for their broadcasting efforts over the past several years. WIU alumni Mario Calero and Andrew Bacon won Crystal Pillar awards in 2015, followed by Jose Gonzalez in 2016 and Emily Manley, Megan Sanchez, Ryan Garity, Emily Kenney, and Dan White this year.

NATAS Mid-America is one of 19 regional chapters, all of whom report to the national office of NATAS (Daytime, News and Documentary, Sports Emmys), located in New York, which shares the EMMY® brand with ATAS (Primetime Emmys) in Los Angeles.
