MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi delivered a "Little Free Library" to Edison School Monday afternoon.

The Little Free Library is a free-standing box where anyone can donate or borrow books in an effort to promote literacy in the community.

The library is the award the WIU chapter received for being one of four winners in the 2017 book drive competition by the national Phi Kappa Phi office.

"This book drive was a wonderful experience," said Phi Kappa Phi Student Vice President Princess Yameini. "The student vice presidents had no idea that we would collect as many books as we did. We are so grateful for everyone that donated children's and young adult books, and we look forward to seeing more children reading, as well as promoting literacy and the love of learning in the Macomb community."

Through the competition, the WIU chapter collected 1,120 books, which were then donated to Macomb area schools and daycare centers. Nationally, the book drive competition was held from Feb. 1-April 30 and collected more than 7,000 books and $1,200 in donations.

Other universities winning the competition included California State University – Chico; the University of Missouri – Kansas City and the University of Missouri – St. Louis. Twenty-two chapters nationwide participated in this year's competition.

The competition began in 2014 and since then has collected more than 35,000 books. Organizations that have received donated books as part of the competition include schools, libraries, hospitals, correctional centers, tutoring and mentoring programs and shelters.
