MACOMB, IL – A group of about 140 high school students from around the region were on campus earlier this week for a meeting of the high school organization Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA).

The event was hosted by the Western Illinois University Department of Dietetics, Fashion Merchandising and Hospitality and included high school students from VIT, Cuba, Lewistown, Knoxville, Galesburg, Camp Point, Liberty, Kewanee and Oneida.

Activities began with a morning business meeting and then afternoon sessions in WIU's Knoblauch Hall. A fashion session, where students decorated masks, was part of this year's FCCLA theme of "Unmask your Potential," and was hosted by Assistant Professor Wanmo Koo and Assistant to the Dean of the College of Education and Human Services Dana Moon.

Students also participated in a food challenge where they were given ingredients unknown to them and were asked to create a dish incorporating them, in a session hosted by Instructor Jill Cassady.

WIU dietetics students conducted a food comparison session for students, which compared similar foods, but one sample was a name brand and the other was a generic or lower fat version.

Associate Professor Sheryl Boston and Assistant Professor Young Gin Choi talked with students about opportunities available in the industry and the programs available at WIU.

WIU students also took part in the event, helping the FCCLA students with their various projects.
