Women's History Month Celebrated at WIU in March

MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University Women's Center, along with numerous campus partners, will host a celebration of Women's History Month during March.

This year's theme is "Women Undefined," which is woven throughout the month's schedule of events.

This year's schedule includes:

March 1
• Poet, writer, activist and educator Nikki Giovanni will deliver a keynote address about celebrating the intersections of race and gender. The address is at 6 p.m. in the University Union Heritage Room. Sponsored by the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center.

• Empowerment Yoga from 7-8 p.m. in the Multicultural Center's multipurpose room. Co-sponsored by Peace Corps Programs.

March 5
• Kickoff Event: Award winning poet, writer, performer and speaker Denice Frohman will speak at 7 p.m. in the Multicultural Center. Her work explores the intersections of race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality and the "in-betweeness" that exists in everyone. Her poetry focuses on social change and explores the tension between the stories people tell about themselves, the ones that are told about them and the ones people tell about each other. Cultural Expressions will perform as an opening act at 6:30 p.m. and refreshments will be provided by the Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. Co-sponsored by Feminist Action Alliance, Casa Latina Cultural Center, LGBT*QA Resource Center, and Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center.

March 8
• Screening of the film "Hidden Figures," at 7 p.m. in the University Union Sandburg Theater. Co-sponsored by the Center for International Studies.

March 20
• Screening of the documentary "MAJOR!," about the life of Miss Major, a trans elder and activist who blazed a trail for other transgender women of color. After the event a discussion will be moderated by WIU Assistant Professor D. Chase Catalano. Co-sponsored by the LGBT*QA Resource Center and Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center.

March 21
• A panel discussion, titled "Demystifying Sisterhood: Breaking Barriers and Destroying Stereotypes About Black Women on Campus," will be held at 6 p.m. in the Multicultural Center. WIU panelists include Assistant Professor Ty Jiles, Assistant Professor Janaya Shaw, Academic Advisor Sharon Hunter, Instructor Monica Wright and Equal Opportunity and Access Director Andrea Henderson. The panel will be moderated by University Housing and Dining Services Complex Director Jailyn Stevenson.

March 26
• Coffee and Conversation in the Multicultural Center, Women's Center lounge. Discussion topics include "What does being a woman undefined mean to you?"

March 28
• Screening of "Delores," a documentary about activist Delores Huerta, 5:30 p.m. in the Multicultural Center multipurpose room. Sponsored by Casa Latina Cultural Center.

Women's History month t-shirts will be sold at each event and cost $5 for students and $10 for non-students.
