MACOMB, IL - Two Western Illinois University faculty members earned recognition at the 15th annual Centennial Honors College's Thomas E. Helm Undergraduate Research Day last week.

Faculty members were nominated for the awards of excellence by their students.

"We had two distinguished professors to win the Western Illinois University Centennial Honors College's Awards for Excellence," said Centennial Honors College Associate Director F. Erik Brooks, chair of the awards committee. "Dr. Tammie Walker and Dr. Brian Bellott are phenomenal professors who embody what it truly means to be notable and talented educators. They challenge their students not only to be the best student scholars they can be, they also challenge them to be the best people they can be. I am proud to work with them in the Honors College."

Tammie Walker, the director of the WIU School of Music, was nominated for the Centennial Honors College Award for Excellence in Honors Teaching by senior communication sciences and disorders and music double major Jillian Escobar, of Hanover Park.

"Dr. Walker has gone over and beyond her role as director of the School of Music," said Escobar in her nomination letter. "She has been a guide, an inspiration and a constant source of wisdom and encouragement."

WIU Assistant Professor of Chemistry Brian Bellott was nominated for the Centennial Honors College Award for Excellence in Honors Mentoring by senior forensic chemistry major Killian Tracey.

"Dr. Bellott has mentored over 20 undergraduate and graduate students," said Tracey in her nomination letter. "He regularly works late hours helping students write grant applications to fund their research."

Co-Sponsors of the Undergraduate Research Day include WIU's Centennial Honors College; College of Arts and Sciences; College of Education and Human Services; College of Fine Arts and Communication; College of Business and Technology and University Libraries.
