WIU Students Win Nine State Broadcasting Awards

MACOMB, IL -- Students in the Western Illinois University Department of Broadcasting and Journalism captured four first place and five second place awards in this weekend's Students in Illinois News Broadcasters Association (SINBA) competition in East Peoria, IL.

This year's winners include:

• Outstanding Hard Television Program: NEWS3 Live at 4 (second place)

• Outstanding Soft Television Program: NEWS3 Good Morning Macomb (second place)

• Outstanding Sports Television Program: WIU Football Coach's Show by Danny Frey, a broadcasting alumnus from Springfield (IL) (second place)

• Outstanding Television Sports Reporting: Justin Fitzpatrick, a junior broadcasting major of O'Fallon, MO (first place)

• Outstanding Videography: Ryan Garity, a broadcasting alumnus of Crystal Lake (IL) (first place)

• Outstanding Soft Radio Program: "Man Coverage," by Ryan Mumma, a senior broadcasting major of Wilmington (IL) (second place)

• Outstanding Radio News Reporting: Marcellus Angel, a sophomore broadcasting major of Rock Island (IL) (second place)

• Outstanding Radio Sports Play-By-Play: Frey (first place)

• Outstanding Use of Sound: John Benedeck, a senior broadcasting major from McHenry (IL) (first place)

Freshman Broadcasting and Journalism major Devin Brooks, of St. Louis, MO, was awarded the Larry Wilson scholarship from INBA. He was one of four scholarship winners in the state.
