MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University former College of Arts and Sciences Dean Inessa Levi, 61, passed away in Florida May 18. There are no services scheduled.

Levi came to Western in July 2004 from the University of Louisville, where she was a mathematics professor (July 1986-June 2004) and the associate dean for research and graduate education in the College of Arts and Sciences (January 2002-June 2004). She earned her master's degree (1982) and her doctorate (1985) in mathematics at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. She left Western in May 2009 for the position of Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Columbus State University in Columbus, GA.

In her nearly five-year tenure at WIU, Levi helped develop a School of Nursing; new in-demand baccalaureate programs in nursing, anthropology, forensic chemistry, liberal arts and sciences and religious studies; a graduate degree program in liberal arts and sciences; and post-baccalaureate certificates in public and non-profit management, applied mathematics, women's studies, African and African Diaspora studies and environmental GIS.
