MACOMB, IL -- The Western Illinois University Counseling Center (UCC) has been re-accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services (IACS), Inc., an Alexandria, VA-based organization of United States, Canadian and Australian counseling agencies. Western is one of five universities in Illinois with an IACS accredited counseling center.

According to UCC Director Amy Buwick, following a review by IACS of the Center's annual report to ensure alignment with, and compliance of, IACS Standards, the highest standards available for campus counseling centers, the Center was recognized for its outstanding professional services to its clientele, which demonstrates the University Counseling Center's continued commitment to provide a continuum of evidence-based services.

While the center completes an annual report to maintain accreditation each year, a comprehensive site visit occurs every eight years. In Spring 2017, the IACS team visited WIU and re-accreditation was affirmed for 2017. Following the site review, IACS noted that the UCC provides excellent, comprehensive mental health services to the University community including individual and group counseling, consultation for faculty/staff/parents/students, psycho-educational programming, and practicum training of graduate students.

The University Counseling Center was established in 1946, and was first accredited by the IACS in the 1970s and then consecutively from 1992 to the present. The center provides personal counseling services to currently enrolled WIU undergraduate and graduate students. Throughout the academic year, the UCC offers the WIU community a wide array of educational programs on such topics as depression, anxiety disorders, suicide intervention/prevention, healthy relationships, stress management and more. UCC counselors hold master's or doctoral degrees and maintain licenses within the state of Illinois as psychologists, social workers and mental health counselors.
