International Education Week Celebrated in November at WIU

MACOMB, IL -- International Education Week (IEW) is typically celebrated nationally from Monday-Friday, Nov. 12-16, but this year Western Illinois University will celebrate with a series of activities for two weeks in November.  
 
According to the United States Department of State, International Education Week (IEW) is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. The joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of the University's efforts to promote programs to prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences.

"International Education Week is one of our premier opportunities to educate and entertain the campus community with international programming," said School of Global Education and Outreach Executive Director Jeff Hancks. "We work hard to bring the world to Western Illinois University, and we hope many people take advantage of the outstanding opportunities to learn more about our world during this special week."

Some of the highlights include:

• World Cup Soccer Tournament (Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2-3)

• Cultural Café Switzerland – University Union Heritage Room (Noon-1 p.m., Monday, Nov. 5)

• Apply for a Passport in the Union (10 a.m.-2 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 7)

• Peace Corps Programs at WIU – University Union Fox Room (4:30-5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 7 and Wednesday, Nov. 14)

• "Bad Ass Beauty Queen" film screening – Multicultural Center (6 p.m., Tuesday, Nov 13)

IEW is sponsored by the WIU School of Global Studies, the Women's Center, the Student Recreation Center, the Peace Corps Program,  the International Friendship Club, Phi Beta Delta International Honor Society, the Department of Foreign Languages and Cultures, the Organization of Arab Students and the Council on Student Activities Funds.
