MACOMB, IL – Beginning in Fall 2019, Western Illinois University will offer an online, NASM-accredited Master of Music with an emphasis in Music Education degree.

The graduate program will provide students with professional development in elementary, middle school and secondary teaching assignments. It will also explore the latest methods and research.

Program directors said the program is intended for current music education practitioners who want to continue in their current position while pursuing an advanced degree. The program is designed for cohorts of students to complete their degree in two years, including two eight-week summer sessions.

"This new online degree offering is an example of WIU's commitment to currency," said Tammie Walker, director of the School of Music. "Our alumni have been requesting this change in delivery method, we listened, and took action. We are so pleased to have received NASM (National Association of Schools of Music) accreditation for this online degree this week as well. Not all online graduate music degrees are nationally accredited, so this is a remarkable stamp of excellence for this new offering."

The online program of study is done through web-based resources and correspondence using WIU's online collaborative platform and other resources. There are a set of nine semester hours of required core classes and 25 semester hours of music education courses.

Application requirements for the program include a 500-word philosophy of music education and goals statement, a sample video of classroom or ensemble teaching and an interview with WIU music education faculty.
