WIU Students Set Record For Finalist Placements in Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Awards

MACOMB, IL – Students in the Western Illinois University Department of Broadcasting and Journalism have set a new record, being named finalists in 14 categories in the upcoming Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) Awards. Last year, students were finalists for 10 awards.

Finalists in the event's management awards category will be named in mid-January and award winners in all categories will be announced at the IBS international conference Saturday, March 2 in New York, NY. There were more than 2,700 entries in this year's competition.

WIU Broadcasting and Journalism Instructor Jasmine Crighton said the results show how hard students have worked over the past year.

"It's exciting to see them break last year's record and achieve nominations in all types of categories," she said.

WIU students and media outlets named finalists include:

• Best On-Air Personality - WIUS – "Reckless at 7 Air Check" - Raul Villalobos IV, a 2018 broadcasting graduate, of Mt. Zion, IL.

• Best Newscast - WIUS / NEWS3 - Oct. 22, 2018 Newscast - Terrance Black, a senior broadcasting major, of South Holland, IL.

• Best Overall Sports Coverage - NEWS3 - Zach Stone, a senior broadcasting major, of Woodstock, IL; Conor Fredland, a junior broadcasting major, of Chicago; and Kyle O'Reilley, a junior broadcasting major, of Roscoe, IL.

4. Best Commercial - WIUS – "WIU Promise Plus Commercial" - Emily Stieren, a junior broadcasting major, of Springfield, IL; Jennifer Weber, a 2018 communication graduate, of Elgin, IL; Nicole Trafton, a senior communication major, of Joliet, IL; and Nicholas Gehricke, a junior broadcasting and journalism major, of St. Charles, MO.

• Best Sports Play-By-Play (Other) - WIUS - WIU Volleyball Play-by-Play.

• Best Sports Pre-Game/Post-Game Show - WIU vs. Youngstown State Pregame Show - Brendan Reidy, a sophomore broadcasting and journalism major, of Chicago; MaKenzie Yearby, a junior broadcasting major, of Grandview, MO; and Tommy Cook, a senior broadcasting and journalism major, of Macomb.

• Best Video Newscast - NEWS3: Live at Four - Oct. 11, 2018 - Marcellus Angel, a junior broadcasting major, of Rock Island, IL; Kai Carney, a senior broadcasting major, of Lynwood, IL; Devin Brooks, a sophomore broadcasting major, of St. Louis, MO; Emily Kenney, a senior broadcasting major, of Farmington, IL; and Black.

• Best Video News Report – "Macomb Faces Violations on EPA Water Regulations" - Brooks

• Best Video Sports Report - NEWS3 Sports 10/11/18 - Zach Stone

• Best Video Sports Play-By-Play - WIU vs NDSU Football Play-by-Play - Ryan Kent, Jr., a sophomore broadcasting and journalism major, of Batesville, IN.

• Best TV Commercial - NEWS3 – "Vote.gov PSA" - Kenney

• Best College TV Station - NEWS3 - Angel, Kenney, Black and Brooks

• Best Use of Twitter - WIUS - Staff

• Best Use of YouTube - NEWS3 - Austin Pilger, a senior broadcasting major, of Beardstown, IL.
