MACOMB, IL -- Chick-fil-A, "the home of the original chicken sandwich," is scheduled to open to the public at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14 in the Western Illinois University Union Food Court.

As part of the grand opening, 30 miniature cows -- Chick-fil-A's mascot -- will be hidden throughout campus early Monday morning, and individuals who find the cows can bring them to the special VIP line any time on opening day, from 10:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., to take advantage of an "express" VIP line, as well as a free small beverage and small waffle fry.

Construction, which began during Summer 2018, was completed in October 2018, followed by staff training and technology updates. Twenty-two individuals have been hired, which includes 17 WIU students. The newest line-up in the University Union Food Court replaces Sbarro, which closed at the end of the Spring 2018 semester. The renovation of the former Sbarro site was funded by a donation from Sodexo, which, along with University Housing and Dining Services (UHDS), will oversee Chick-fil-A Express on the WIU campus.

"We are excited to continue to invest in Western, and to provide another food choice that our students and members of our campus and local communities have asked for," said Kay Martin, Sodexo senior vice president-universities.

Along with Chick-fil-A Express, the Union Food Court features Burger King, Einstein Bros. Bagels and the One Stop Rocky Shop. Chick-fil-A's regular business hours, which begin Monday, Jan. 14, are 10:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

A special Chick-fil-A "Community Day" will be held Friday, Feb. 1. This event, which will be co-sponsored by Intercollegiate Athletics, will include extended hours. More information will be announced closer to the date. Area residents who visit the University Union can now park in one of four reserved "community" parking spots in the northeast University Union parking lot.
