MACOMB, IL – Beginning in Fall 2019, Western Illinois University will offer an online degree in communication.

The online Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication provides students with the opportunity to attain valuable skills and knowledge relating to understanding and promoting the effective management of human communication processes. This degree can be completed entirely online, regardless of whether students enter the program as a freshman or as a student transferring from another institution.

The degree offers students core communication courses (Introduction to Human Communication, Argumentation, Comm. Theory and Research Methods), as well as the opportunity for applied electives (Computer Mediated Communication, Interviewing, Conflict Management and Great Speeches). These courses allow majors the opportunity to have flexibility as they choose what career path to seek.

Communication majors graduate and go on into career paths that may include (but are not limited to) sales, politics, law, management, customer service/experience, public relations, healthcare, marketing, recruiting, training and development and human resources.

"The new online bachelor's degree in communication, offered by Western Illinois University, provides place-bound students with the opportunity to earn an extraordinarily flexible and marketable degree at their own convenience," said Department of Communication Chair Pete Jorgensen. "The courses comprising the major have been designed by and will be taught by established scholars in the field who know and understand the value of this material for our students. This degree will focus on providing students with the knowledge and understanding of how to apply the principles and processes of communication in a variety of personal and professional contexts. With courses available in areas such as organizational communication, interpersonal communication, intercultural communication, persuasion and conflict management, there is something for everyone included in the curriculum."

The BA in Communication will be done through web-based resources and correspondence using WIU's online collaborate platform.
