Area Accounting Students Take Part in Annual Accounting Challenge

MACOMB, IL - - Area high school students demonstrated their accounting knowledge on Western Illinois University's Macomb campus recently at the 14th annual Accounting Challenge.

Sponsored by WIU's accountancy department, Beta Alpha Psi (BAP) and the Illinois CPA Society, the event not only provided area students a chance to showcase their accounting skills through a written competition, but it also provided them with information about Western's accountancy program. For the 14th annual event, eight area high schools and a total of 71 students competed. Western awarded scholarships to each first, second and third place individual winner choosing to major in accounting at WIU.

The participating high schools were Macomb, Spoon River Valley, Rushville-Industry, Hillsboro, Astoria, United, Hamilton and Illini West.

While the students were testing, an education round table was conducted for the instructors, led by WIU faculty, including Greg Woodruff, chair of the WIU accounting and finance department.

Individual Awards – Division I
First Place: Cayden Boyer, Spoon River Valley
Second Place: Audrey Tarochione, Spoon River Valley
Third Place: Caleb Harrison, Spoon River Valley

Individual Awards – Division II
First Place: Joelle Butzow, Macomb
Second Place (tie): Logan Altenberger, Hillsboro; Ryan Thorman, Macomb
Third Place: Alexis Wolf, Hillsboro

Team Awards – Division I
First Place: Bad Assets, Spoon River Valley, team members: Audrey Tarochione, Weslee Frame, Caden Boyer and Caleb Harrison
Second Place: Big Bad Credit, United, team members: Cade Whitsitt, Alena Buckley, William Ornduff and Alejandro Martin
Third Place: Astoria, Astoria, team members: Arael Smith, Cheyenne Lund, Sierra Lund and Dallas Malott

Team Awards – Division II
First Place: Ledgerndary, Hillsboro, team members: Kylee Pastrovich, Ally Devroe, Alexis Wolf and Logan Altenberger
Second Place: Bois 2 Men, Macomb, team members: Ryan Thorman, Colin MacGregor, Luke Silberer and Asante-Imani Johnson
Third Place: Rich and Sad, Macomb, team members: Natalie Benson, Kali Foxall and Mia Pfafman
