MACOMB, IL – Loraine Brasel, a lecturer in Western Illinois University's English as a Second Language (WESL) program, has been chosen as a fellow for the English Language Fellow Program. Beginning in August, Brasel will teach for 10 months in Thailand.

The fellow program is funded by the U.S. Department of State. Brasel will teach at Chiang Rai Rajabhat University in Chiang Rai, Thailand.

"I began my ESL career in 1981, serving as an English instructor as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Chiang Rai, Thailand, so this is full circle," she said.

After 12 years of teaching in the WESL program, Brasel is retiring from WIU.

Brasel received her bachelor of arts in Spanish and her master of arts in English from WIU. She also earned a bachelor of arts in journalism from Eastern Illinois University and completed coursework toward a Ph.D. in English at Illinois State University.

Brasel, of Beardstown, is the third WESL instructor to be awarded the fellowship. The other instructors were Hannah Murphy, who served in Ethiopia, and Jessica Ruppert, who served in Mexico. Instructor Erin Franken served as a fellow in Turkey before joining the WESL program.
