MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University recently received an Illinois Centennial Award for the University's 120 years of service, and many accomplishments.

The Illinois State Historical Society annually recognizes schools, churches and corporations that have "operated in the Prairie State for 100 or more consecutive years," providing cultural and economic support to the people and communities around them. Western was founded as a normal school (or teacher training college) in 1899, and officially opened for the first day of classes Sept. 23, 1902. Western Illinois State College became known as Western Illinois University July 5, 1957.

Over the years, Western has had a multi-faceted impact – including the 130,000 graduates it has produced, in a wide variety of fields – and has achieved distinction in ranking among the best Midwestern colleges and universities. English Professor Emeritus John Hallwas, who also serves on the Society's Board of Directors, nominated Western for the Centennial Award.

"It is an honor for our institution to be recognized by the Illinois State Historical Society, particularly as we are ready to celebrate Founders' Day," said WIU Acting President Martin Abraham. "We're proud of our long history and accomplishments over the years. Thank you to the Illinois State Historical Society for this award."

The University will celebrate Founders' Day Monday, Sept. 23 on the Macomb campus and Tuesday, Sept. 24 on the Quad Cities campus.
