MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University Building Maintenance Carpenter Brad Utter has been named the Al and Elaine Goldfarb Civil Service Employee of the Month for October 2019.

Utter began working at WIU in April 2014 as an extra help employee in Building Maintenance. He was hired as a full-time carpenter in the same department in September 2014.

According to his nominators, Utter works year-round in the elements and always has a smile on his face.

"Making repairs to roofs, operating the JLG lift during cold, windy days, he also assisted with the freshmen photo shoot on Move-In-Day," said the nominators. "He often works behind the scenes to keep the campus running smoothly throughout the year. He truly cares about the work he does and those he serves. He truly wants to better the campus and help make the environment more pleasing."

In August 2010, the Goldfarbs established an endowment to permanently fund the University's Civil Service Employee of the Month award. The Goldfarb endowment is used to fund a $100 award for the recipient of the Civil Service Employee of the Month, as well as a plaque.

The WIU Foundation provides a $500 stipend for the Civil Service Employee of the Year. Western faculty, staff and administrators, as well as community members, wishing to nominate a civil service employee for the monthly recognition should contact Civil Service Employees Council (CSEC) representative Christine Staley at CD-Staley@wiu.edu.
