MACOMB/MOLINE, IL -- As part of the national celebration of Student Employment Week April 12-18, Western Illinois University has honored the student employee of the year and the student employee supervisor of the year. Due to COVID-19, winners were given their awards individually this year in their departments.

Earlier this year, WIU's Student Employment office was moved to the Human Resources office. The office sent out nomination forms to current student employees, as well as supervisors for nominations for both categories. They were judged on five attributes, including reliability, quality of work, initiative, professionalism and uniqueness of contribution.

The student employee winner, and the recipient of a $75 gift certificate for the University Union Bookstore, was Anthony Gomez, a senior law enforcement and justice administration major from Chicago. He was nominated by the Undergraduate Admissions Office.

The second place winner, and recipient of a $50 gift certificate for the bookstore, was Antoinette Adams, a senior construction and facilities management major from Joliet, IL. She was nominated by Gail Ault from the Office of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Third place, and the recipient of a $25 gift certificate for the Quad Cities bookstore, was Torrence Johnson, a senior mechanical engineering major from Chicago. Johnson was nominated by Arnold Bangel from the School of Engineering, on the Quad Cities campus.

The other student employee nominees included Colin Stansky, a senior majoring in music theater from Florence, AL; Louis Riley, a senior majoring in art from Iowa City, IA; and Carlee Critchelow, a senior majoring in agriculture from Chandlerville, IL.

There were 10 students who nominated their supervisors this year. Jacqlin Richmond, who is the University Coordinator of Student Teacher Experiences in the College of Education, was chosen as the Student Employee Supervisor of the Year, and was given a gift certificate for the University Union Bookstore.

Supervisors are judged on mentoring skills, professionalism and leadership. Other nominees included Chad Sperry, director of the GIS Center at WIU; Tim Hallinan, assistant director of development in the Foundation and Development Office; Amy Randall, information technology support associate for CAIT; Professor Mark Bernards, of the Ag Agronomy Department; Ranessa Cooper, chair of the biological sciences department; Charles Derry, coordinator of Library Computer Services; Joe Butcher, hardware/software support association IV for U-Tech; Michelle Frederick, operations director of the Adult Education Service Center; and Diane Cassimire, athletics communication associate in Athletics.
