Buie: 2021 WIU Homecoming Grand Marshal

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University alumnus Emmerson Buie, Jr., Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Chicago Field Office, has been named the 2021 Homecoming Parade Grand Marshal.

The Homecoming Parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2. Homecoming events kick off Sept. 23 with the annual "Town & Gown" event and the unveiling of the most recent Rocky on Parade statues at The Forum in downtown Macomb.

Buie, who was named an Alumni Achievement Award recipient at Western in 2019, is a 1987 operations management graduate. He was named special agent in charge of the FBI's Chicago Field Office in July 2019.

At WIU, Buie was a member of the Student Orientation Board, University Judicial Board, and Black Student Association (first vice president). Buie also served as a conference center assistant and ROTC Military Science III Commander, started the Minority Orientation Board and BSA Judicial Advocate Program, and was the president of Omega Psi Phi Epsilon Beta Chapter for three years.

Before entering the FBI, Buie served four years in the U.S. Army as an infantry officer and Desert Storm veteran. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge and multiple commendations for his military service.

Prior to moving to Chicago, Buie was the Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's El Paso, TX, Field Office. He joined the FBI in 1992. After graduating from the FBI Academy, he was assigned to the Denver Field Office, Colorado Springs Resident Agency, where he investigated all criminal matters until November 1999, when he was promoted to a Supervisory Special Agent and assigned to the Counterterrorism Division, Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Operations Unit. From 2002 to 2006, he served as the Senior Supervisory Resident at the Fairview Heights Resident Agency in Illinois, under the Springfield Field Office.

From 2006 to 2008, he served as an Assistant Legal Attaché and Acting Deputy Legal Attaché in the U.S. Embassy in London. While there, he was the primary contact for coordinating the FBI's work in several international counterterrorism and anti-organized crime agencies, and he has also served as assistant special agent in charge of criminal matters for the FBI's Springfield Field Office, responsible for National Security, Criminal and Administrative matters from 2008 to 2014, where he also served as Springfield's Leadership Development Coordinator.

Buie was promoted to the Senior Executive Service (SES) in December 2014, and assigned as the FBI Cyber Division's Senior Liaison to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), National Cybersecurity, Communication, and Integration Center (NCCIC). In this role, he helped coordinate numerous public and private sector investigations and intelligence-sharing efforts between the FBI, DHS and other agencies.

Buie will be speaking with students on campus Friday, Sept. 24.
