WIU Mourns Student Death {2/8/22}

MACOMB, IL -- The Western Illinois University community is saddened by the death of WIU freshman Angela Layton, 19, of Prosper, TX, who died Feb. 7 in Macomb. Layton joined Western as a first-year student in Fall 2021.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to Angela's family and friends. We are incredibly saddened by her sudden passing," said WIU President Guiyou Huang.

Lisa Melz-Jennings, who is a University 100 (U-100) instructor and Academic Success Coach, met Layton during her first semester at WIU when she was a student in Melz-Jennings' U-100 class.

"Angela was one of those people that could light up a room with her presence. It is heartbreaking to lose someone so young and with so much potential. I feel fortunate to have had her in my class," Melz-Jennings said.

Kelly Morris, academic advisor for First Year Students and the WIU Reach Program in the First Year Advising Center, worked closely with Layton as her advisor.

"Angela was a really sweet young lady who wanted to work for the 'greater good' in our world," Morris shared. "She was exploring English/Language and Literature, with interests in Creative Writing. She was a strong student with an inquisitive mind, and she will be missed."

Services are pending.
