MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University School of Agriculture is coordinating a project to support and thank local veterans by offering free vegetable and flowering plants, which will be ready for pick-up Saturday, May 6.

Veteran Garden Day will be held from 9-11 a.m. at the Macomb American Legion, 221 E. Washington St., and from 8-10 a.m. at the Bushnell VFW, 181 E. Hail St.

WIU Agriculture students will be planting vegetables and flowers in a campus greenhouse. The plants were donated to the project.

The plants will then be handed off to local FFA chapters in the Bushnell-Prairie City and West Prairie school districts to transplant and finish the growing process until the plants are ready to be distributed.

The Illinois House of Representatives has designated the first Saturday in May as Veterans Gardening Day, designed to honor and commemorate Illinois' veterans.

Veterans can register to pick up the plants by visiting bit.ly/WIUGARDENING.
