MACOMB, IL - The Western Illinois University Student Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants (SCIMA) captured two prestigious awards to mark its second year of existence.

The Western group recently was selected for the Institute of Management Accountants Student Chapter Gold Award of Excellence and also received the Clark Johnson Achievement Award for its outstanding promotion video. The national awards are presented to the student chapter that best reflects outstanding leadership.

According to Diana McCabe, WIU's chapter adviser, the chapter's activities were numerous and varied this past year, ranging from professional interactions on field trips and presentations to service activities. Service activities included sponsoring a Salvation Army food drive and hosting Christmas and Easter parties for Lincoln Elementary School students with developmental challenges. The organization also added another service activity by providing accounting services for Relay for Life. In addition, during the Spring 2004 semester, SCIMA was recognized at the Office of Student Activities Teamlead Awards banquet for its Outstanding Volunteer Service by a Group or Organization.

To complement its many service projects, SCIMA members' professional development opportunities included 13 chapter members attending sessions at the Fourth Annual IMA Student Conference and SCIMA members visiting NTN Bower in Macomb for a tour of the plant facilities and a meeting with the financial information professionals.

McCabe added that the Western chapter, which consists of 40 active members, held several successful fundraising projects to support chapter activities, as well as the scholarships that the chapter awards to its outstanding members. Chapter members participated in the IMA Student Case Competition, the IMA Clark Johnson Achievement Award competition and attended two meetings hosted by the Illowa Chapter of the IMA, Western's parent chapter. In addition to student fundraising projects, SCIMA received financial support from the department of accountancy and from the Illowa Chapter of the IMA.

“SCIMA had a banner year,” said Penny Yunker, WIU accountancy department chair. “Our students are to be commended for the service they provide to the University and the community. They are most deserving of these national awards.”
