MACOMB, IL - - More than 170 Western Illinois University employees were honored at the annual Employee Service Recognition Reception held on campus April 26. Employees with 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 years of service to WIU were recognized and five employees will be announced as recipients of community service and distinguished service awards.

The Community Service Award – Administrative recipient was Amy Buwick, a counselor in the Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Resource Center at Beu Health Center. She was nominated for the children’s summer running group she leads in Macomb. A nominator’s letter explained how she started running with her son a few years ago to get him interested in the healthy benefits of exercise. “A few friends started coming and her group of runners grew,” the letter continued. “Amy doesn’t just run with the kids. She teaches them about the importance of warm up, stretching, cool down and proper form. She also instructs them on appropriate footwear, pacing, sprinting and diet and nutrition.”

The Community Service Award – Civil Service recipient was Andrea Henderson, Equal Opportunity Officer in the Affirmative Action and ADA Compliance Office. She is a board member of Macomb’s Big Brother/Big Sister; Samaritan Well, Inc.; and PRIME (Pride and Responsibility in My Environment); a Macomb fire and police commissioner; co-chair of Edison School’s PTO Market Day fundraising program; and a volunteer member of the Community- University Partnership Program (CUPP). The nominator’s letter stated: “She is knowledgeable, professional, organized, a coalition builder, a concerned citizen who ‘walks the talk,’ a person who knows that there are issues affecting Macomb and the University and works to make Macomb and the University a better place to live and work.”

The Distinguished Service Award – Administrative recipient was Dan Wise, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. His nominator’s and recommendation letters praised his long-term leadership and commitment to the University, having worked to establish a leading master of arts degree program in geography; creating curriculum that meets the requirements of the National Weather Service and guiding the process of the creation of the bachelor of science degree program in meteorology (2003); implementing a computer cartography program which gave rise to GIS (Geographic Information Systems) technology and hosting the McDonough County GIS Center on campus; and working with the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs to promote wind energy in Illinois and the WIU Peace Corps Fellows Program. “Dan is the ultimate professional…His contributions to Western have been significant, and he is most deserving of this honor,” stated the nominator’s letter.

The Distinguished Service Award – Civil Service recipients were Lois Retherford, academic advising center secretary, WIU-Quad Cities; and Roberta Smith, building service worker, physical plant, WIU-Macomb. Retherford was praise for being “a team player” and involved in leadership, serving as the civil service representative for the Quad Cities, and serving on numerous committees including the Quad Cities Self-Study, Campus Master Plan, Faculty Staff Development and Action Planning Committee. Nominator’s praised Smith for “going the extra mile attitude in everything she does.” In addition to her regular work schedule, Smith likes to work special events in Western Hall such as Commencement. “When I think of Roberta, I think of someone who is so full of compassion, drive and dedication and you could never imagine what it would be like without her.”
