MACOMB, IL -- The demolition of the former Auxiliary Services Building, located on Murray Street (C.T. Vivian Way) on the Western Illinois University-Macomb campus, has been scheduled for Friday, June 1, according to Ted Renner, construction project coordinator II.

Laverdiere Construction (Macomb, IL) will fence the area approximately Monday, May 28. Murray Street/C.T. Vivian Way will remain open for traffic during the building's razing, but will be closed once construction of the Multicultural Center begins, Renner said. In addition, the Casa Latina mural currently located on the exterior of the building will be removed prior to demolition and will remain in Casa Latina's possession.

The sole occupant of the building, Casa Latina, will move to its temporary facilities in Olson Hall Wednesday, May 16. Following Casa Latina's move, Physical Plant personnel will complete minor asbestos abatement and disconnect utilities prior to the June 1 demolition.

After the building is demolished, the concrete foundation and surrounding parking lot will also be removed. The site will evolve into a green space (grass field) until the construction of the new Multicultural Center -- which will house Casa Latina, the Women's Center and Brooks Cultural Center -- begins, which is tentatively scheduled for late 2007/early 2008, Renner said.

The Auxiliary Services Building on Murray Street formerly housed Casa Latina, the Western Illinois Credit Union and the University Post Office. The building, which was originally called the Auxiliary Enterprises Building, was constructed in 1957.
