Services Set for Professor Emeritus Howard Kalwies

MACOMB, IL - - Services have been set for Thursday, Nov. 15 for Howard H. Kalwies (Kow weese), a Western Illinois University professor emeritus who died Nov. 9 of a massive heart attack while in a Springfield hospital.

The memorial service will be held at noon Thursday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 2000 W. Adams Street, Macomb.

Kalwies came to Western in 1967 as a French language and civilization professor. In 1987, he transferred to the communication arts and sciences department where he was a recipient of the prestigious Wayne N. Thompson Professorship. Fluent in French, Italian and Latin, Kalwies had received three National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships and the Ludwig Vogelstein Prize in Paris.

He retired from Western in 1996.
