WIU to Host Illinois Academic Challenge Feb. 15

MACOMB, IL - Many of the region's brightest high school
students will be on the Western Illinois University campus
Thursday, Feb. 15 to participate in the 27th annual
Illinois Academic Challenge competition.
The Academic Challenge is sponsored statewide by Worldwide
Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE), headquartered at the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. WIU's College of Arts
and Sciences and the Western Chapter of the Illinois Society of
Professional Engineers (ISPE) co-host the competition at Western
Illinois University.
The academic tournament is a competition for individuals and
schools, with students demonstrating their abilities in two of
the following areas: biology, chemistry, computer fundamentals,
engineering graphics, English, mathematics and physics.
Students are tested in the morning and individual awards and
team trophies will be presented at a 2:30 p.m. awards ceremony in
Currens Hall 203.
Participating high schools include: Rock Island; Macomb;
Rushville; Havana; Bluffs-Meredosia-Chambersburg, Brown County,
Mt. Sterling; Lewistown; and Westmer, Joy.
In addition to the group competition, 42 individual
all-stars who achieve superior scores in the regional contests
at WIU will vie for top sectional and state honors.
Schools compete in one of four divisions, based on
enrollment: Division 300, schools with 300 or fewer students;
Division 700, schools with 301 to 700 students; Division 1500,
schools with 701 to 1,500 students; and Division Unlimited,
schools with more than 1,500 students.
The exams have been compared to the Advance Placement tests
that qualify high school students for college credit, and were
drawn up by college professors from various state universities.
