Fulkerson Named Interim Chair for Psychology

MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University Psychology Professor Emeritus Frank E. Fulkerson has been named the department's interim chair, effective Aug. 1, according to College of Arts and Sciences Dean Inessa Levi.

Professor Virginia Diehl, who served as chair since 2004, has returned to her faculty role.

"Dr. Fulkerson is highly qualified to serve as interim chair of the department of psychology. He served as chairperson in the department from 1976-1985 and as interim chair of the department of physics from August 2004-July 2005," Levi said. "Frank was assistant dean in the college from 1985-1989 and associate dean from 1989-1998. It is with great gratitude and respect that I thank him for agreeing to help the college once again during his retirement."

Fulkerson received his Ph.D. in experimental psychology from Saint Louis University in 1968 and joined Western Illinois University's faculty as an assistant professor that September. He was named chair of the department in 1976. He has also held posts at St. Louis University and NASA.

A member of the American Psychological Association, the Society for the Teaching of Psychology and the Council of Teachers of Undergraduate Psychology, Fulkerson's major teaching interests include career development, introductory psychology and behavior modification. His research interests include college educational psychology, career development, teaching of psychology, learning and memory.

Fulkerson officially retired from Western Illinois University in May 2003, but has continued to serve and participate actively in the University community.
