Celebration of Life for Economics Professor Emeritus Karl Marx

MACOMB, IL – A celebration of life will be held from 2-7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27 for Western Illinois University Economics Professor Emeritus Karl B. Marx III, 78, of Colchester, who died Sept. 22 in Macomb. Family and friends are invited to the celebration, which will be held at the Marx's home, 915 North Coal Rd., Colchester.

Marx joined the WIU faculty in 1961. He retired in 1997. During his tenure at Western he founded the economics department and served as the department's first chair in 1968. Marx also served as acting chair of the department from 1989-90 and from 1976-80. He developed several computer graphic programs to enhance the teaching of economic theories.

Marx received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Michigan State University and his doctorate from the University of Illinois.

Survivors include his wife, Maureen, who is the chair of the WIU department of communication sciences and disorders; one son, John, of San Francisco, CA; two daughters, Susan of Gainesville, FL, and Deborah Marx Jones of Tampa, FL; three grandchildren; and one sister.

Memorials may be made to the Audubon Society or to the donor's choice. Jones' Mortuary in Colchester is in charge of arrangements. Cremation rites have been accorded.
