MACOMB, IL -- College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Associate Dean Dan Wise has announced that he will retire June 30, 2009 after 31 years of service. A farewell reception for Wise will be announced during the Spring 2009 semester. A national search to fill the associate dean position will be held, according to CAS Dean Inessa Levi.

Wise joined geography department faculty in 1977 and was responsible for establishing and coordinating meteorology and computer cartography programs. In 1987, he was appointed geography department chair, a post he held until 1998. One year later Wise was named to his current post in the college, where he serves as an adviser to the dean on matters concerning the college budget, management of space and facilities, secondary teacher education issues within the college and CAS matters at the WIU-Quad Cities.

During his tenure, Wise has received several awards including Outstanding Teacher (1984), Distinguished Teaching Achievement from the National Council for Geographic Education (1982) and Administrative Distinguished Service Award (2006).

"The College of Arts and Sciences owes a great debt of gratitude to Dan for his many years of academic and administrative service to the college and to the University," said Dean Inessa Levi. "On a personal level, Dan has served as an adviser and confidante to me since my arrival in Macomb and I will greatly miss the knowledge, skill and good humor he brings to this office."

Wise received his doctorate from Ohio State University in 1979.
