MACOMB, IL -- Terri Hare, associate director of financial aid at Western Illinois University, has been named director of University Scholarship Activities, effective March 8, according to WIU President Al Goldfarb.

Hare succeeds Janice Owens, who retired Jan. 1 after 27 years of service. Hare has served as associate director of financial aid since August 2008. Prior to that, she was the interim associate director. Hare joined the financial aid office as a secretary II in 1984 and was promoted to financial aid adviser I in 1986. She was reclassified as a financial aid adviser II and III, and in 1992 she was promoted to financial aid adviser IV.

During her years in Western's Financial Aid office, Hare has been responsible for hiring and training financial aid advisers and staff; supervising a financial aid team; assisting students and parents with the state and federal financial aid process; administering and maintaining the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) Monetary Award Program (MAP) and Silas Purnell Illinois Incentive Grant (IIA) in excess of $10 million per academic year; serving as WIU's representative to the Illinois Student Assistance Commission; and working as WIU's system administrator for the ISAC state MAPnet Internet delivery system.

As associate director, Hare has been responsible for the program management, training, customer service and information dissemination functions. She also administers the Satisfactory Academic Progress standards; chairs Satisfactory Academic Progress and Financial Aid Appeals and Forms committees and supervises program management and counseling staff.

"Terri's vast financial aid background and her many years of experience working with students and families will provide a seamless transition in her role as director of University Scholarship Activities," Goldfarb noted.

Hare is a member of the Illinois Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, currently serving as vice president of Senior Public Institutions for ILASFAA, and is a member of the Midwest Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (MASFAA).

At WIU, Hare has been a member of the WIU Employee Benefits Committee and served as the Civil Service Employees Council (CSEC) Group II Representative; the Student Services Awards Committee; and the Strategic Planning Implementation Team. In the community, Hare serves as the vice president for the Humane Society of McDonough County.

She received her master's degree in instructional design and technology from Western (2007) and her BOT/BA degree from WIU (1996).

The final candidate for the director of University Scholarship Activities position, Craig Schmidt, withdrew from the search in late January.
