MACOMB, IL -- Horn Field Campus, Western Illinois University's "hidden treasure," as student facilitator Ryan Croegaert, a junior biology major from Davenport (IA), called it, will provide training for individuals interested in facilitating programs at HFC's 92-acre retreat. An introduction to HFC's Teams Course Training workshop is slated to begin at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26 at HFC, which is located approximately one mile south of Macomb. The training will continue from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, and lunch will be provided.

According to Ian Van Anden, challenge course manager at HFC, members of the WIU and Macomb community are welcome.

"This is an excellent opportunity for individuals to get outside, learn, teach and develop or hone leadership and group-facilitation skills. There are many opportunities to facilitate at Horn Field Campus during the summer, as well as year round," Van Anden noted. "Saturday's training session will be held outdoors, so we are advising workshop attendees to dress appropriately."

According to Mindy Pheiffer, HFC program coordinator, Friday evening's session will feature keynote speaker Professor Michael McGowan, from WIU's recreation, park and tourism association (RPTA) department and vice president of the national Wilderness Education Association.

"Dr. McGowan has a wealth of experience working with challenge-course facilitators," she said.

Registration deadline is noon Tuesday, Feb. 23; individuals can contact Horn Field Campus at (309) 833-5798 or send an e-mail message to register at HF-Campus@wiu.edu. Learn more about Horn Field Campus at wiu.edu/rpta/HFC/index.html.

HFC is located south of Macomb at 985 China Road. From South Johnson Street (past Macomb High School), turn right on China Road and follow the road one-quarter of a mile to the Horn Field Campus entrance. Parking is permitted on the HFC lot.
