WIU Celebrates 15th National Girls and Women in Sports Day

MACOMB, IL - Western Illinois University will celebrate the 15th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day with a variety of events in Western Hall on Saturday, Feb. 24.

February 7 was the nation's commemorative day, but WIU has designated this Saturday as its day to recognize local female athletes at halftime of the Westerwinds basketball game against IUPUI.

The WIU athletic department, Women's Center, Campus Recreation and Physical Education have invited elementary and high school female athletes and their coaches from seven surrounding counties, as well as the Girl Scouts in McDonough County, to attend the 1:00 p.m. game free of charge. Any parent or guardian accompanying an athlete will be admitted for half price.

Schools and athletes in attendance will be recognized at the Westerwinds game, and athletes will be presented with a certificate of participation and an information packet on female sports. A Celebration of Female Athletes will follow the contest. The presentation will feature select WIU female coaches discussing a variety of topics related to female athletics. Westerwinds athletes from severalsports will be present for a question and answer period.

"No Stopping Us Now" is the theme for this year's celebration, which has been established on a national level by Girls Incorporated, Girl Scouts of the USA, the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport, the Women's Sport Foundation and YWCA of the USA to bring national attention to the achievements of female athletes.

WIU senior Doshia Woods will be honored after the Westerwinds game at Senior Day, and former Westerwinds softball players Mindy Dessert, Holly Killion, and Kendra DeRosa will be honored as WIU retires their jerseys. Past , present and future athletes are invited to participate in the day's celebration.
